Should a tradesperson use an AI phone answering service?

What an AI receptionist does, what it costs, and when a human is still better.

A missed call for a plumber or electrician is often a missed job. The caller rings the next name on the list. An AI receptionist answers every call, and for most trades that alone pays for it.

What it does

Answers in your business name, asks what the caller needs, takes their name, number and address, answers basic questions about your services and area, and either books a slot in your calendar or promises a callback. You get a text with the details straight away.

What it costs

A small monthly fee plus a few pence per minute of calls. For a sole trader that typically lands well under the price of one missed job a month.

When a human is better

Complex quotes, upset customers and anything that needs judgement. The AI hands those to you with a summary rather than trying to handle them. Think of it as a very reliable message-taker with a calendar, not a replacement for you.

Setting it up

Half a day to write the scripts and connect the calendar, then a week of listening to the recordings and tightening the wording. Details are on the AI receptionist service page.
